Lloyd Jacquet was a writer of articles about radio technology for various newspapers including the Brooklyn Eagle from 1919 until 1935. That was the year he joined Major Malcolm Wheeler Nicholson, another newspaper columnist, to form their own publishing company called the National Allied Newspaper Syndicate. In the competitive world of newspapers, the syndicates were the highest paid because the publishers knew their products drove up circulation. Syndicated content was so popular that by 1929 newsstands could even sell reprinted Sunday Funnies that were bound together as a book of comics. first began in 1929. Nicholson wanted to promote his own newspaper syndicate by proving that his material could also be attractive to newsstand buyers, so he bound his as-yet-unpublished material into a similar book of and distributed it to newsstands. His first issues were printed by the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper press. He hoped the sales would be impressive enough to convince newspaper publishers to subscribe to his service. Instead he accidentally invented a brand new media outlet, the comic book! Although his dream of running a newspaper syndicate did not pan out, he was able to make a profit on his first issues, and that grew into a gold mine over the next three years.
By the summer of 1936 Lloyd Jacquet had left National Allied and formed C.J.H. Publications with Harold Hersey and H. D. Cushing. The initials C.J.H. refer to Cushing, Jacquet, and Hersey. Their company produced a line of pulp magazines based on Dan Dunn, Tailspin Tommy, and Flash Gordon, who were all popular comics in the McClure Newspaper Syndicate. After one year C.J.H. folded and Lloyd Jacquet became the art director at Centaur Comics.
In 1939 he left Centaur to form his own art studio Funnies Incorporated at 45 West 45th Street, where he produced packaged comics for publishers like Fox, Timely, Novelty, Hillman, and Gilberton. His first artists were Carl Burgos, Paul Gustavson, Ben Thompson, and Ray Gill. Unlike Chesler and Binder, most of the artists at Funnies Inc. worked from home and delivered their assignements. They were paid on a freelance basis and often received printed credit. Funnies Inc. is renowned for having produced the earliest material for Timely Publications.
Funnies also developed a promotional giveaway comic for movie theaters called Motion Picture Funnies Weekly. Burgos’ Human Torch and Everett’s Sub-Mariner (which had appeared in Motion Picture Funnies) became leading features in Timely’s Marvel Comics #1 in 1939.
When Jacquet’s shop Funnies Inc. finally closed in 1951 many of the staff went to work for the Dell comics line.
