Al Fago (1905-1975)

Alfred Fago was born January 19, 1905 in Naples, Italy. When he was one year old his parents Pasquale and Ersilia Fago and his older sister Camille left italy and moved to America and settled in Yonkers, New York, where his parents had three more children, Lavinia, Anna and Vincent (b.1914). The father was a house painter.

After high school Al Fago attended a trade school to study industrial design. By 1925 he was working as a designer at the Alexander Smith Rug Company in NYC.

In 1943 he began to assist his brother Vince Fago drawing "Tommy Cat" and "Frenchie Rabbit" for Timely Comics.

In 1945 Al Fago managed the Fago Shop with his younger brother Vince Fago at 55 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. They produced features for Ace Periodicals, Street & Smith, Standard Magazines, and Charlton. They provided packaged art to Charlton when they first launched a comic book line in 1945, beginning with Yellowjacket. Al Fago's Frisky Fables were released through several publishers from 1945 onwards. The shop also produced Kiddie Kapers for Four Star and Wilbur Comics for MLJ. “Icicle Ike” for Novelty Comics, "Elsie the Cow" for the Borden Company, and funny animal comics for Jason Comic Art.

Vince left the shop in 1948 to take over the “Peter Rabbit” syndicated newspaper comic strip. Al Fago married Blanche Grauaglia in 1949 and she joined him as editor and business manager of the Fago Shop.

In 1953 he became the managing editor of Charlton Comics, the company that published his Atomic Mouse in 1953. In 1955 he created Atomic Rabbit and Timmy the Timid Ghost in 1956. He worked on Fighting Marines, Eh!, From Here to Insanity, and Tex Ritter Western. He also made Underworld Comics for Fawcett.

In 1958 Al Fago started the short-lived Fago Magazines publishing company.

In 1958 he created “Tuffy” for St. John Publishing Company

During the 1960’s he drew dozens of activity books for Whitman and Golden Press.

During the 1970’s he worked for Pendulum Press.

In 1996 he published Rabbit-Man’s Music Book.

Al Fago died at the age of 70 on February 19, 1975 in Milford Connecticut.
